Research

The Department of Pharmacy is devoted to teaching and research related to the development, manufacturing and use of pharmaceuticals. The Pharmacy discipline is broad with interfaces on science, technology and social studies. The Department thus benefits from being located at the BMC and close to the Ångström and Rudbeck laboratories, three multidisciplinary research and teaching centers at Uppsala University.

Research programme
The Department centers its research on three areas, namely Drug Delivery, Rational Drug Usage and Pharmaceutical Materials Science. The research is developed by a series of research groups, some of international prominence. The research groups represent a unique cluster of academic competences in Sweden and Department of Pharmacy has thus a key role in the development of the pharmacy discipline in Sweden. For an overview of the profiles of the research groups, go to Research groups.
Teaching programme
The Department offers a series of courses on basic and advanced levels in the academic disciplines Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics, Pharmacy Practice and Policy, and Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics. The courses are intended for undergraduate and graduate students but also for professionals. The combination of basic and advanced courses makes it possible to aquire a scientific base as well as a scientific front-line competence in Pharmacy. For an overview of the courses, go to Education.
PhD programme
The Department offers PhD programmes in the academic disciplines Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Biopharmaceutics Pharmacy Practice and Policy and Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics. Administration
Research groups
Biopharmaceutics
(lead by prof. Hans Lennerns) studies the interaction between drugs and biological processes, such as membrane transport and metabolism, in order to obtain the ultimate clinical effect of a drug.

Drug Delivery
(lead by prof. Per Artursson) studies the absorption, distribution and delivery of drugs and develops new in vitro and computer models for predictions of ADMET properties for drug discovery and development.
Go to page >>
Pharmacy Practice and Policy
focuses on scientific evaluation of pharmaceutical treatment, especially from the point of view of the patient, for example in terms of quality of life.
Go to page >>
Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry
(lead by prof. Martin Malmsten) develops design principles for pharmaceutically relevant systems at a molecular and colloidal scale.
Go to page >>
Pharmaceutics
(lead by prof. Göran Alderborn) studies pharmaceutical formulation and manufacturing.
Go to page >>
Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics
(lead by prof. Dag Isacson) studies the causes and effects (clinical as well as social and economic) of the use of pharmaceuticals from a population perspective.
